[Bsa-troop85] Summer Camp Update #1

Hi Troop 85.

Summer camp is great.  Kids are doing well.  No serious injuries.

(actually no injuries at all--and we hope to keep it that way)

We did very well getting here yesterday and made excellent timing.  Thank
you parents for getting the boys there on time.  We arrived in
McCalester in perfect time for lunch...at 10:30 am.   I recommend the
Long John Silvers.  Note for future trips,  if you need to be anywhere
on time, have Mr. Troost always be the lead driver.  We actually passed
the "Welcome to Camp Tom Hale!" sign at exactly 1:01 pm--perfect time to begin waiting in a long line of cars, eventually to park and then
proceed with a two-hour check in.

But, that's all just the logistics to get to the fun stuff!

The first-time summer campers went on a tour of camp after our arrival and
proceeded down to the waterfront where they immediately got their
clothes soaking wet...because of a torrential downpour.  But it's all
good!  Mr Curry and Mr Troost made sure that the gear at camp didn't get too wet.  And it saved us time in having to make sure the boys needed a shower.

Dinner--pot roast.  Most boys had seconds or thirds.  That was then followed by a
trip to the just-opened trading post where most boys went for second or
third dessert.

Today started with, (wait for it, wait for it)...Ham Bars!  And yes, they
look as bad as they sounds.  I would have a photo for you (think brown,
bumpy looking hash-brown shaped brown thing.)  But fortunately it
doesn't taste as bad as it looks.  It actually tastes pretty good, with
some cheese and ham (think cordon-blu--but with no chicken--and not as
edible looking).

The scouts are all now off on their first merit badge courses ranging from
robotics to shotgun shooting, reptile studies to tattoo art (just
kidding on the last one).  Everyone is in the classes they wanted and I
was able to straighten out a few scheduling issues with no problems.
The camp staff has been very helpful ("what, you again?").

We really are having a great time.  Everyone slept well I'm told.  Boys
made it to chapel service and had to listen to me do my best Scottish
accent (it's always good if you can work a Scottish accent into a
sermon), and they are now off having fun and learning lots of things
that will help them have interesting and successful lives.  That's the
plan!

I'll try to send more updates when possible (getting online is difficult).
Mr Abels phone seems to work if you need to reach someone.

Thanks for your help!  And your prayers...
