As always, survival camping is limited to boys that have achieved First class scout. IF your son has not achieved First class as of yet, the campout will focus on achievements to reach first class. The consent form is attached to this email. We will plan and discuss the campout this evening. If you and/or your son are planning on attending, please make certain you send $15 for the boy and $20 for yourself to cover meal expenses. I will not be able to attend this campout, unfortunately. I need to make sure we have enough leaders to help the boys work on achievement items and I need someone to be able to haul the trailer. Camp McClintock is near Bartlesville.see the map, http://www.cherokeebsa.org/index.php?option=com_content &view=article&id=102&Itemid=142 , and is a great place to camp. There is a wide open field and lots of woods and a "private" piece of the trail of tears. Please respond to this email letting me know how many boys and adults we will have for this campout so we can make a good plan. Boys need to be prepared for this campout. Temps could get down to the low 20's and we may see snow. This is not a problem for boy scouts, though, as we are always prepared. Please make sure your boy has a sleeping bag rated at no higher than 15-20 degrees and you might even send an additional blanket with them if it is a 20 degree sleeping bag. Boys should have a sleeping mat to keep their backs off the ground. Therma-rest are good mats. They need to have the appropriate clothing for cold, including changes of undergarments for bedtime. IF they change into dry clothes before bed, they will sleep warmer. They should also bring their books and any equipment they need to complete the achievements they would like to complete. Many of them need to plan, cook, and clean meals. Some of them have a hike to complete.adults going on the campout should be prepared to do a 5-mile hike. Others have orienteering to complete. This is a great campout for that activity. They are also planning on playing escape and evade during the evening. Perhaps even asking other troops that will be camping there to play with them. We will talk more tonight, including how to get boys and adults through a cold campout. See you tonight. As the boys will learn in their advancement work, the sleeping bag warmth comes from the "dead air" insulation of the bag (the thickness or loft of it when being used). The bottom of the bag then provides very little insulation because of the body weight on it. That's why the pad is so important, to give insulation from the cold ground. As for the blanket, if it is placed on top of the sleeping bag, it will tend to push down on the bag and cause it to have less insulating value -- so the blanket should go *inside *the sleeping bag to be most effective, or it may do more harm than good. Because it is a separate unit, we need a separate application filled out for each youth or adult to be registered. Venturing is open for boys and girls ages 14-20; they have more flexibility in what they can do, and are intended to be more self-directed. Mr. Abels has agreed to serve as adviser, on the condition he will have some good support from some other adults. The re-charter will be turned in Saturday 12/6, so if we can get any applications before then it will be helpful. Mr. Abels will have forms available Monday night, or you can fill out the attached forms, print and sign them and bring them with you. Adults filling out adult applications, be sure to sign 2 places, one of which authorizes a background check. We've had a bit of a gap in our age groupings, with a couple of years of not many boys at 14 years old leading to lean years in the crew; but with more getting to that age we hope it will become more active again. For boys who pay the $100 dues with the troop and want to register with both units, we don't charge any extra. For older boys who are not able to participate so much with the troop and just want to participate in the crew, the annual dues are $75. Mr. Abels and Mr. Trost will be collecting forms on Monday; Mrs. Hatheway will be collecting dues. Have a great Thanksgiving! I hope everyone is having a fantastic Thanksgiving enjoying friends and family! This is a reminder and a request to respond back to everyone if you are going to assist breakfast cooking and serving on Sunday. As is Troop 85 custom, on months in which there are 5 Sundays, we meet at the church at 5:30am or at the Salvation army at 102 N. Denver Ave. at 6am, make, and serve breakfast. This is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the holidays by giving back to the community. Bring any family or friends that are in town and would like to contribute.
