Popcorn pickup this weekend! Message-ID: <03a501cfc8ac$9f83f870$de8be950$@cox.net> We will be picking up our popcorn order this weekend. I do not have a scheduled time, yet. The Gillespie's are out of town, and I will be leaving town tomorrow afternoon for the weekend. I will likely only need two vehicles to pick up the popcorn - they must have space available in their vehicles - and will drive the popcorn to the Gillespie's home where their daughter will take possession of the popcorn. This is important! Please respond if you can help. We do not have a time scheduled yet, so if you have a date - Friday or Saturday - and time that work best for you, please let me know and will attempt to organize that particular time. I will forward the Gillespie's address as I get responses. Your help in this endeavor is greatly appreciated by myself and the troop! The "survival" portion of survival campouts are for those scouts who have earned the First Class scout rank (after Scout, Tenderfoot, and Second Class). By that time they have covered all the skills for outdoor camping, and it typically takes a year or more to reach that rank; the survival campouts give them a chance to practice more of thsoe skills. Scouts on a survival campout who don't yet have First Class will have an opportunity to work on their advancement with the adult leaders. Campouts are never "required"... the scouts, especially the newer ones, will typically have opportunities to complete requirements for their advancements on any of the campouts. For those of you with boys who are going to be inducted into the OA, the first weekend of October is the Fall Ordeal. October 3-5. The next weekend is going to be a Camporee at Camp Garland of which we will be staff. I need to get a count of boys and adults that will attend, and their shirt sizes so I can order the T-shirts. We also agreed (not me) to wear tie dye kilts as the theme is the Scottish Games. The leadership will be looking for fabric and we will send home the material and instructions to make kilts. October 10-12. The weekend after that, we will be hosting Webelos at Camp Russell for a Saturday overnight campout to introduce Webelos to the troop and to Boy Scouts. We need lots of troop and adult participation for that to make it a memorable and enjoyable program. October 18-19. We have been asked to assist with the FAM JAM the weekend after that. We will not have enough boys to represent as a troop (so far as I can tell) but the boys and adults who would like to assist are welcome to do so. Please let me know and I will pass your information on to the leaders. October 25-26. Also in October, we will have a Court of Honor on Monday, October 13th at the If your son from 7-8pm. Parents are EXPECTED to attend as we will celebrating the boys' accomplishments since our last Court of Honor. Lastly, the Marshes have asked the troop to join them for a Halloween Party on Friday, October 31st at 6:30pm. They will send out additional information as the date gets closer. It will include dinner, activities, and a movie. Please respond back to let me know which of these you and your son will attend. An accurate-ish count is important. That one is rather obvious, so now you parents may be asking what the second requirement is - it should be obvious as well - we need parents to volunteer their time to allow our Troop to be successful and thrive. It seems only fair that parents - Moms and Dads - help out, otherwise you are leaving the responsibility of interacting with your Scouts to others. We have a lot of new Scouts, so it would be nice to see some more new parents get involved. There are many ways to help - volunteer in a position on the Troop Committee, go on the monthly campouts, be our Popcorn Kernel, be a merit badge counselor (everyone has interests they enjoy - and you can even counsel for merit badge topics you don't enjoy), be our Summer Camp coordinator, help plan high adventure trips, etc. The bottom line is our boys, the Scouts, need all of us to advance and be successful in Scouting. The parent volunteers get the enjoyment and satisfaction of seeing the Scouts learn, grow, advance, and mature as well. It has also been observed that most Scouts who reach the Eagle rank have at least one active and supportive parent backing them up. So come to Scout meetings and meet some of the adult volunteers you are entrusting your Scouts to. We are also fortunate to have some adult Scouters who no longer have kids in the Troop - the kids went off to college, but the parents still help out - and we greatly appreciate it. We are Boy Scouts, not babysitters, so please don't just kick your Scouts out of the car as you drive through the Church parking lot. Please plan to attend and recognize and honor the achievements and advancements of the Scouts in the last 6 months. They have earned your recognition and they deserve your participation in all areas of Troop activities. So please consider volunteering some of your time with the Troop. I'm certainly not the adult who volunteers the most of his/her time, but if more parents don't want to volunteer their time, then I suppose I should reconsider the amount of time I spend with your Scouts or working for them. This is the ceremony where boys are awarded the merit badges and rankings earned in the last 6 months. Mothers of scouts earning a new rank will also receive a pin. In celebration, the Troop will be hosting a pot luck dinner prior to the ceremony. We?ll be having hot dogs hot off the grill and we are asking that families supply the sides and desserts. We're using VolunteerSpot to organize our upcoming activities. Here's how it works in 3 easy steps: 1) Click this link to see our Sign-Up on VolunteerSpot: http://vols.pt/6ufrDf 2) Review the options listed and choose the spot(s) you like. 3) Sign up! It's Easy - you will NOT need to register an account or keep a password on VolunteerSpot. Note: VolunteerSpot does not share your email address with anyone. If you prefer not to use your email address, please contact me and I can sign you up manually. **** If you are a mom and this will be your first Court of Honor, please send me a note so that we can be sure you have a ribbon for your rank pins. **** Even if your scout has not earned a merit badge or moved to a new rank, please still plan to attend. In addition to honoring the accomplishments of our scouts, the Troop Committee will be passing on useful information regarding annual dues, merit badge opportunities and the camping schedule for the rest of the year. If you have questions about how you can be involved or anything else about the Troop, this is a great opportunity to ask them. *** We look forward to seeing you on October 13th and celebrating our scouts? accomplishments!
