The first of our plans will help the boys keep track of their merit badge work. SCOUT BINDERS: We need each boy to bring their own 3-inch 3-ring binder to use at scouts. Scout Binders will be the tool to help the boys take responsibility and keep track of their work. Each month we will be working on different merit badges as a group. The boys will be asked to print and bring the corresponding worksheet for that particular merit badge. (All of the worksheets are available online and can be printed from the BSA website.) Whether the work is finished in a couple of weeks or six months, the boys will be able to keep track of their progress by keeping the paperwork handy in the binder. FOR NEXT MEETING: Please help us by making sure your son brings a 3-inch binder it to the next meeting. ADULTS NEEDED: Last year we were fortunate that Timm Dower led the Photography merit badge lessons and organized the Cinematography merit badge lessons for us. The boys had a great time, and we want to do more of that. In April, my wife, Wynne, will be leading the Gardening merit badge lessons. If you are looking to get involved and help the troop, please consider leading a merit badge lesson. You don?t have to be an expert in the area, just willing to read a merit badge book of your choice, attend a couple of meetings and present the material. Please contact me if you are willing and interested. The campout will be over the last weekend of Spring Break. For the families that aren?t traveling, this is a great way for the boys to get out and camp with their friends. If your son will be going with us on this campout, we need to know at tomorrow night?s meeting. We will be collecting food money for the campout, so please send $15 with your son to the meeting. We will be teaching the boys some new dutch oven recipes on the campout, and working on cooking skills. We will be talking about the details with the boys at the meeting. ADULTS NEEDED We also need adults to attend too. Adults, if you are able to camp with us, please respond to this email and let me know. SCOUT BINDERS As mentioned in the email this week, we are also starting the Scout Binders this week. Please have your son bring a 3-inch 3-ring binder, and we will be going over the plan for getting organized with our merit badge work. IS YOUR SON PLANNING TO GO TO PHILMONT IN 2016? We are needing to make deposits for our high adventure trip to Philmont Scout Ranch for the Summer of 2016. That sounds like a long ways away, but it will be here before we know it. Going to Philmont for many boys is a rare opportunity. It has long been the premiere event for Scouts, and many adults have great memories of going as a young scout. We are organizing our list of boys that will be going, and need to finalize our deposits. For younger boys that may not know about Philmont, please take a look at information on the website.http://www.scouting.org/Philmont.aspx Some of our newest scouts will be eligible (age 14) by next summer, so please consider going, it will be an amazing time. We have had a partial election and two positions have be filled. Ryan Lindsey is our Secretary and Paul Dower is Administrative Vice President. We still need to fill 3 more positions, President, Program Vice President and Treasurer. We had planned to do this tomorrow night, however, I will not be able to make tomorrows meeting. So we will conclude our elections on March 30th. Please, if you want to run for one of these positions, show up at this meeting prepared to campaign for the position you want. Have a speech ready. We will finish the elections and then watch a training video. Message-ID: <1BFD92C0-2469-486E-896C-F071DBA8B7CE@marshstudios.com> Many of our scouts are advancing in rank, and will be recognized at the upcoming Court of Honor on April 13. There are just three meetings left before the court of Honor, and the last requirement for each rank is a Board of Review. A Board of Review consists of a minimum of three adults (not parents of the boy, or the scoutmaster) and the scout earning the rank. The scout sits on one side of the table facing the adults. The adults use this time to have a conversation with the scout about what they learned while working on that rank, they ask some specific questions about certain requirements, and have the scout give feedback about how things are going in the troop. It is similar to a job interview, but their advancement does not hinge on how many questions they can answer or if they ?perform? well or not. (If there is serious reason why a boy shouldn?t be promoted in rank, the adults can discuss it, but that is not the purpose of a Board of Review.) Scouts finishing up their ranks will need to conduct their Board of Review before the Court of Honor, if they want to be recognized and earn their rank. If your son needs to do this, please encourage him to make plans and be proactive to get this done. At the regular scout meeting, the boys will need to find available adults and ask them if they would sit on their board of review. There may be cases where all of the available adults are already committed for that meeting. This is a great opportunity for adults to come to the Monday scout meetings and help us out. We can always use adults to sit on a Board of Review. It is a great way to get to know the other scouts in your son?s troop. If you have any questions, you?re welcome to contact me.
