At tonight's meeting we will be making final plans for the campout this weekend, May 8-10. 

Please have your son bring money tonight for the patrol meals. 

If families are coming on the campout with us, please let me know, because my wife will be coordinating meals outside of the troop meals. 

Adults please respond and conform if you are coming.
We need to plan for adult meals (with the troop) and transportation for the boys.

I will send out another email In a couple of days with more details about the campout, the state park, what you will need and other important information.

We are going to have a great weekend at Roaring River, rain or shine (hopefully more shine)

Here is some important information to know:

Cell phones will not work at the State Park except those on a Verizon network. But there is some WiFi access near the lodge.
Walkie talkies might be good if you would like to bring them for the boys.
If anyone has a weather radio, please bring it. Might come in handy!

There is a good chance we will get rained on at some point, so please bring rain gear, some dry changes of clothes and a towel to be safe.

If there is severe weather, there is shelter at the main lodge and the camp hosts will alert the campers. There is a plan in case of emergency.

If anyone has dry firewood to bring, please bring it so we can have campfire Saturday night.


FISHING:
Boys under 15 will need to pay $2 for a required trout tag for the day (Saturday) Please send money with your son.

Boys over 16 and adults will need a required Daily fishing license for $7.00 plus a $3 daily trout tag. 

They say the fish are biting on white salmon egg bait.
Recommend 10 or 12 size hook. (lightest line possible?4 or 6lb test, and a treble style hook is good)
Corn is also good to use for bait.

A friend of mine, Jeff Stava, is project manager for The Gathering Place project, and will be telling the boys all about it tomorrow night.

The Gathering Place is an enormous world-class park that is being built on the River Parks at around 31st and Riverside. The plans look outstanding, and there is already lots of construction going on, and lots of excitement about the project.
Jeff grew up in Tulsa, earned his Eagle Scout, is an alumnus of Jenks and Baylor, and has been very involved with the community of Tulsa ever since. He is a great communicator and the boys will enjoy him.
Please come to the meeting and hear the presentation. Parents and siblings are welcome to come, too.

We will NOT be having a regular troop meeting on Memorial Day, but instead we will be meeting the Friday after Memorial Day for a fun event.

Hi Troop 85-Summer Camp Attendees,
This is a reminder to please complete your Boy Scout Physicals!? We only have two weeks before camp!? I have only received a few of them.? Please have your pediatrician complete the form.? Adult leaders have to also complete one.? The form is available on this page (use the summer camp one): http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety/ahmr.aspx?
Also be sure you look at the list of items to bring to camp on the Leader's Guide: http://www.halescoutreservation.org/leadersguide.asp First time summer camp attendees:? be sure to have a cot.? We don't use these on our monthly campouts, but for a week you really need one and the tents are larger and have a wooden floor so they work well.? It is nice to have a box or locker to put your gear in--Walmart has action packers that work well.? I've also used just a storage box. Try to get a box that will fit underneath the cot.? Not all boxes will fit underneath and that makes it hard to move around in the tent.??
Regarding money and medicines:? For money for merit badges and spending money--please put it into a durable envelope with your scout's name on it and amounts listed.? I'll keep the money and distribute it as they ask.? The boys can keep their own spending money if they wish.? One thing to keep in mind (sadly) there are occasionally thieves at camp. Last year we had a boy who was pick pocketed during a merit badge class and later found his wallet thrown into the woods.? One time they set a sting to catch a kid who was stealing things out of boy's day packs. So it's best not to carry a lot of money.? $25-$30 is plenty for spending money (approx$5/day), but they don't half to have that much, but most of the kids like to buy drinks, snacks, other items. 

For medicines:? I can distribute them, but the meds need to be clearly labeled with the scout's name/doctor/amount and time to administer.? And you have to include a letter that I, or one of the other Scout Dads--Paul Marsh or Jeremy White, has your permission to distribute them.

Portable projector:? If anyone has one you would like to loan out, we could have a movie night or two.? I'd want to watch some interesting/inspiring films so I would be open to suggestions (if we get a projector).
The leader's guide has most of the information you need.? We'll send more info later on times for leaving--but I think we'll try to prep the trailer on an earlier day then meet at the north parking lot of Jenks South East (101st and Yale) at 8:30 on Sunday the 31st to load up and try to depart around 9:00.? We meet there instead of at St. James because church will be in session.

Hi Troop 85 Summer Camp Attendees,
It's only one week until Tom Hale Summer Camp 2015!? Here are some things to know:
1.? You must have your medical and permission forms!? We won't be able to take you to camp unless you have it completed by your physician.? If you need them, the forms are here: http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/HealthandSafety/ahmr.aspx 
?2.? Be sure to look through the list of items to bring to camp.? A list is with the leader's guide here: http://www.halescoutreservation.org/leadersguide.asp?3. Departure:? We will meet next Sunday morning, May 31, at 8:30 at the north parking lot of of Jenks SouthEast.? Medications (with a permission slip for me and/or Paul to distribute them) and any last minute paperwork should be brought to this meeting & turned into one of the adults (TBD). ?Please be early, not late.? We will load personal gear into the trailer, take a picture and leave as quickly as possible (at 9:00). ?Scouts should have money for lunch and any cash they will be taking to summer camp. ??We will depart and stop in McCalester for lunch.... then head to HSR to arrive for check in at 1:00. 

4. Suggestions to consider that may not have been covered earlier. ?(i) Do not forget your Cot, water bottle, rain gear, flashlight. ?(ii)Some scouts will pack a flat sheet along with their sleeping bag. ?If it is hot at night a flat sheet to cover with instead of burying yourself in a sleeping bag can be more comfortable. ?(iii)?A day pack to carry small items around with during the day can be nice. ? ?
5. CASH:If your or your scouts want an adult to hold excess cash we will have someone prepared for that.... an envelope with your scout's name on it will help facilitate this activity. ?I am chaep, so if you are looking for guidance $5 a day will provide more than enough candy in a day. ?Additional amounts for T-Shirts; plastic mugs they can get branded; and other quality merchandise is at your discretion. ?The shop does take credit cards if you so dare.... ?Other than making sure the scouts pay their merit badge fees, I will not intend to manage cash for them... ?I will ask them to think about it, but if they have $50 and ask for it all on Monday then when it is gone it's gone. ?They will eat just fine & have plenty of water to drink. ?

Just a reminder that we will not be having our regular troop meeting tonight because of Memorial Day. 

Instead of our meeting tonight, we will be having our Troop 85 cookout this Friday night at 6:30. 

If you haven't RSVPd to the cookout yet, please let us know if you will be coming.

Hi Troop 85 Tom Hale Scouts!
It looks like we will have a nice break in the weather next week, so it should be a good week for summer camp!

I wanted to mention something about cell phones.? I would prefer if you didn't bring them.? Here's why:
1.? They don't really work at camp.? It's located far from most cell phone towers.? Only US Cellular phones work in the campsite.? Other phones occasionally work from random places at random times.? Last year we had a Scout call his parents but the cell phone cut out before the conversation finished.? That caused the parents to worry that something was wrong and called the camp.? The camp doctor came to our campsite late in the evening to see if anything was wrong.
2.? Cell phones can be easily lost/stolen/broken during a week of active outdoor activities.
3.? They really shouldn't be needed!? We are going camping so it should be a break from all the technology that our lives in the 2010's are inundated with.
If you do want your Scout to have their phone, please let me or Paul know that they will be bringing one.? We can keep them in our vehicles and they could use them on the ride back home to contact parents.

There should be plenty of room for Brennen, both for his stuff in the trailer and in the vehicles. ? We could probably meet on the east side of Tahihina where highway 83 from Whitesboro comes into the town.? We have to turn left there anyhow. Paul, do think that will work or do you have a suggestion of where to meet?? We can call you when we leave McAlester around 11:30-12.? We want to try to be at the camp at 1:00.

I just wanted to let you know Brennan is having a little bit of a hard time with the move, thus he would like to bring his phone. He is not one to carry it around, it will be in his action packer. ?I think a comfortable familiar tent mate might help.
