I think Tracy intended this to go out to the group rather than just to
me; I thought the new scouts and parents might appreciate the experience
of one of our new scouts on a "survival" campout.

Davis went on the survival campout, prior to First Class rank, and loved
the fact that he got to hang out with the adult leaders while working on
his advancement skills. I was concerned that he would feel like the odd
man out, but it actually worked to his advantage. He got to know the
leaders better, enjoyed the campfire conversations, and one-on-one
attention. Even if your scout isn't ready for the survival, I recommend
he think about attending. It was good for Davis!

Campouts are never "required"... the scouts, especially the newer ones,
will typically have opportunities to complete requirements for their
advancements on any of the campouts.

The "survival" portion of survival campouts are for those scouts who
have earned the First Class scout rank (after Scout, Tenderfoot, and
Second Class). By that time they have covered all the skills for
outdoor camping, and it typically takes a year or more to reach that
rank; the survival campouts give them a chance to practice more of thsoe
skills.

Scouts on a survival campout who don't yet have First Class will have an
opportunity to work on their advancement with the adult leaders.

Is this camp out this weekend a requirement? We are new and not
ready for the survival portion so I wondered if there will be other
badges they are working on if they are not ready for survival?
