[Bsa-troop85] Summer Camp--thoughts on cell phones

Hi Cheryl,
There should be plenty of room for Brennen, both for his stuff in the trailer and in the vehicles.   We could probably meet on the east side of Tahihina where highway 83 from Whitesboro comes into the town.  We have to turn left there anyhow. Paul, do think that will work or do you have a suggestion of where to meet?  We can call you when we leave McAlester around 11:30-12.  We want to try to be at the camp at 1:00.

Hi,
Sorry the move is going rough.  He will have fun at camp.
I think if we can meet outside of camp it will be easier to connect, unless you'd like to stay around at the campsite for a bit while we are setting up.  If you would like to stay for a little while then you are most welcome to come to the campground, but it's quite chaotic while we check in and there is quite a bit of traffic.  But it's all part of the fun.  Otherwise we can try to connect in Talihina somewhere.
Unfortunately I seem to have lost my phone and will need to get a replacement today.  My number is 918-312-9219.  I don't have Paul's at the moment.
Have you looked through the leader's guide about costs for ammunition?  I imagine it's in there.  I don't have time to check right now.  I would imagine $20 would be plenty, but hopefully the info is in the guide.
Let us know if you want to come to the campsite or meet us outside.
Best!

Hello ,
I hope the cook out was lots of fun. I am sorry to have missed it.

Where do I need to meet the troop tomorrow? Parking lot? Camp site? Talahina?
What time should I meet you?

I just wanted to let you know Brennan is having a little bit of a hard time with the move, thus he would like to bring his phone. He is not one to carry it around, it will be in his action packer.  I think a comfortable familiar tent mate might help.

I hope someone will be sending the daily emails, they are so much fun to read.
Have a great week!
Cheryl

Hi Troop 85 Tom Hale Scouts!
It looks like we will have a nice break in the weather next week, so it should be a good week for summer camp!

I wanted to mention something about cell phones.  I would prefer if you didn't bring them.  Here's why:
1.  They don't really work at camp.  It's located far from most cell phone towers.  Only US Cellular phones work in the campsite.  Other phones occasionally work from random places at random times.  Last year we had a Scout call his parents but the cell phone cut out before the conversation finished.  That caused the parents to worry that something was wrong and called the camp.  The camp doctor came to our campsite late in the evening to see if anything was wrong.
2.  Cell phones can be easily lost/stolen/broken during a week of active outdoor activities.
3.  They really shouldn't be needed!  We are going camping so it should be a break from all the technology that our lives in the 2010's are inundated with.
If you do want your Scout to have their phone, please let me or Paul know that they will be bringing one.  We can keep them in our vehicles and they could use them on the ride back home to contact parents.
Best,
--David
